WEEKLY SCHEDULE:
The Kansas City Wizards travel this weekend to face the Los Angeles Galaxy at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Kansas City tied the other LA-based club Chivas USA last Saturday at sold-out CommunityAmerica Ballpark despite finishing the game with nine players due to a pair of ejections. Kansas City is 16-21-7 all-time against the Galaxy, including a 4-13-5 record in road games. Los Angeles features former Wizards midfielder Chris Klein, while the Wizards employ former LA goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. The Wizards will host their weekly press conference Thursday at the team’s Swope Park Training Center.

MIDFIELDER ROGER ESPINOZA CALLED TO HONDURAS NATIONAL TEAM:
Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza has been named to the 23-man Honduras roster for a pair of upcoming World Cup Qualifiers. Espinoza joins Toronto FC star Amado Guevara as the only MLS players named to Head Coach Reinaldo Rueda squad for games June 6 against the United States in Chicago and June 10 against El Salvador. Espinoza will be available to Wizards Head Coach Curt Onalfo for selection Saturday against the Los Angeles Galaxy before reporting to Honduras camp next Monday in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Honduras currently occupies 3rd place in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. If qualification ended today, Honduras would qualify automatically to the 2010 World Cup along with the United States and Costa Rica, while Mexico would play the 5th seeded team from South America’s Confederation for a place in the South Africa World Cup. Honduras is 1-1-1 after a 2-0 loss to Costa Rica, a 1-1 tie with Trinidad and Tobago and a 3-1 win over Mexico.
Espinoza earned his first appearance for his birth nation Jan. 22 in Honduras’ first game of the 2009 UNCAF (Central American Football Union) Nations Cup. Espinoza appeared three times during the five-game tournament, scoring his first goal in the 3rd place match to give Honduras a 1-0 win. Espinoza stayed with the National Team for a World Cup Qualifying loss to Costa Rica Feb. 11 but did not make the game roster. Espinoza was then called to Honduras camp again for a pair of qualifiers March 28 against Trinidad and Tobago and April 1 against Mexico. He did not enter either match, though he was on the 18-man roster against Mexico.
WIZARDS PLAYERS NOMINATED FOR GOAL OF THE WEEK, SAVE OF THE WEEK:
Wizards striker Claudio Lopez has earned a nomination for the MLS Goal of the Week honor, and goalkeeper Kevin Hartman is up for the new MLS Save of the Week award. Lopez struck a perfectly placed free kick into the upper-right corner Saturday against Chivas USA in a 1-1 draw. Hartman is nominated for a first-half save on a dipping drive off the foot of Chivas USA and U.S. National Team star Sacha Kljestan. Vote for Goal of the Week here and Save of the Week here.
JUNE 6 MATCH FEATURES FAITH AND FAMILY NIGHT, GIRL SCOUT GROUP OUTING:
On Saturday, June 6, the Kansas City Wizards will host Faith and Family Night as the rival Columbus Crew comes to CommunityAmerica Ballpark for a match at 7:30 p.m. CT. Wizards forward Adam Cristman will address participating fans after the game about his faith.
Members of the local Girl Scouts will also attend the match June 6. The Scouts will gather early in the day at Dave and Buster’s across the street from the stadium at The Legends, then arrive early to CommunityAmerica Ballpark for a pre-match clinic. All participants will be able to take part in the Human Tunnel before the match, and Scouts receiving a Gold or Silver Award will be recognized on the field prior to the match.

WIZARDS, HEARTLAND SOCCER ASSOCIATION KICKOFF PARTNERSHIP:
The Kansas City Wizards and Heartland Soccer Association (Heartland) announced a major strategic partnership last Thursday that will help both organizations promote the game of soccer in the Kansas City area and increase participation in the sport. The organizations then joined together Sunday during the Kansas City Invitational tournament at Heritage Soccer Park for an event to kickoff the partnership. WOLFF WINS MLS PLAYER OF THE WEEK, CONTENDING FOR BUDWEISER GOLDEN BOOT:
Kansas City Wizards forward Josh Wolff has been named MLS Player of the Week for the 2nd time this season and the 7th time in his career. Wolff scored both Kansas City goals in a 2-0 win Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium. Thanks to his effort, the Wizards became the first club to defeat RSL in a regular-season game at their new venue. Wolff is now tied with Chicago’s Brian McBride for the MLS lead with six goals on the season. All six of his goals have come over the last six games.
With two strikes Saturday, Wolff moved into a tie with Los Angeles Galaxy’s Edson Buddle for 15th in MLS history and 8th among active players in goals scored. He is also nominated for the Goal of the Week Award. Fans can vote online at http://web.mlsnet.com/sights/goal_of_the_week.

The Kansas City Wizards host 1st place Chivas USA this Saturday, May 23 for Kansas City’s second-ever Dog’s Night at the Wizards event. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their favorite canine friend out to CommunityAmerica Ballpark to watch the Wizards take on League-leading Chivas USA. Dog/owner ticket packages cost just $30, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Kansas City area animal shelters. (May 16, 2009) – The Kansas City Wizards handed Real Salt Lake their 1st regular-season defeat at Rio Tinto Stadium Saturday night, beating last year’s conference finalists 2-0 on a pair of goals from striker Josh Wolff. Wolff now has six goals on the season, putting him in a tie for 1st in MLS with Chicago’s Brian McBride. Saturday night marked Wolff’s 2nd multi-goal game of the season, the first coming against McBride and the Fire. Wolff has now scored six goals in his last six matches. Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made a season-high seven saves on the night, extending his MLS records in wins (142), shutouts (81), saves (1165) and consecutive minutes played (8280). After D.C. United’s comeback tie Saturday night at Chivas USA, the Wizards sit in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference just one point behind D.C. and Chicago.
Kansas City opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Wolff beat the offside trap with a perfectly timed run at midfield. Midfielder Jack Jewsbury released Wolff behind the defense with a pass from the defensive third, and Wolff was in the clear with only goalkeeper Chris Seitz to beat. Seitz came off his line quickly, stopping Wolff’s initial shot but Wolff continued on with the ball and slotted a shot into the open net for a 1-0 Kansas City lead.
Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman then showed why he is one of Major League Soccer’s all-time best, stopping a pair of shots in the 36th minute. First, RSL right back Robbie Russell pushed forward into the play and hit a first-time rocket from 20 yards out. Hartman was up to the task, parrying the shot wide for a corner kick. On the ensuing re-start, Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman headed a Javier Morales cross on frame, but Hartman again reacted quickly to make a sprawling stop.
Kansas City extended its lead in the 67th minute, again through Wolff. Substitute right-back Michael Harrington won a ball at midfield, eluded an RSL tackle and carried the ball fully 40 yards up the right flank. Harrington sent in a hard cross along the ground just behind Real’s back line for Wolff completing a run from the center circle. Wolff redirected the ball past goalkeeper Chris Seitz just outside the six-yard area for his 2nd goal of the match and his 6th of the season. Wolff is now tied with Chicago’s Brian McBride for the MLS lead in goals scored. He now has a pair of two-goal performances on the year, including two late-game strikes to help the Wizards earn a 2-2 tie on the road against McBride’s team.
Real Salt Lake threatened twice in the dying minutes of the game, but the Wizards held on to earn their 2nd road victory of the season. In the 89th minute, Hartman punched clear a 35-yard free kick off the foot of Will Johnson. In the 90th minute, substitute forward Fabian Espindola found himself in behind the Kansas City defense, but Hartman stopped a point-blank shot at the near post before Kansas City cleared the rebound.

USA-Mexico Soccer Rivalry Continues on Club Level as Tournament Pits Four Teams from Major League Soccer Against Four Teams from Federación Mexicana de Fútbol First Division
(May 14, 2009) – The Kansas City Wizards will participate in the 3rd edition of SuperLiga™, the competition that brings the USA-Mexico soccer rivalry to the club level. SuperLiga pits four MLS clubs and four clubs from the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Primera Division against one another. Kansas City has history with both of its opening-round opponents from Mexico’s top flight, Club Santos Laguna and FC Atlas. The Wizards will play one home SuperLiga game at CommunityAmerica Ballpark and one in St. Louis, Mo.
The United States National Team is 9-0-2 versus their southern neighbors at home since 1999 with a 19-3 goals-scored advantage. This newfound success by the U.S. has pushed the USA-Mexico soccer rivalry to its highest level in series history. Kansas City’s first match of the tournament will be played against Atlas AC Sunday, June 21 at 3:30 p.m. CT in St. Louis, Mo. CommunityAmerica Ballpark is unavailable due to a Kansas City T-Bones baseball game, and no other venues in the Kansas City metropolitan area meet tournament criteria. The match will be held at Robert R. Hermann Stadium at St. Louis University.
Tickets for the game against Atlas in St. Louis start at $20 and are available by calling the Kansas City Wizards ticket office toll free at 1-877-828-7222. Packages are also available that include one (1) ticket to the SuperLiga match in St. Louis and a voucher for one (1) ticket to a later Wizards match at CommunityAmerica Ballpark starting at $30. The voucher can be redeemed for a ticket Sunday, June 28 against Santos Laguna in the final SuperLiga group match or for the following Saturday-night MLS games at CommunityAmerica Ballpark: Jul. 4 vs. Houston Dynamo, Aug. 29 vs. Real Salt Lake, Sep. 19 vs. FC Dallas, Sep. 26 vs. Colorado Rapids, Oct. 17 vs. Seattle Sounders FC or Oct. 24 vs. D.C. United. Wizards season ticket holders have the option to use Special Game B for the match in St. Louis. After facing Atlas, the Wizards will travel to Foxborough, Massachusetts to take on the New England Revolution Wednesday, June 24 at 6 p.m. CT at Gillette Stadium. New England is the defending tournament champion and will be competing in the competition for the 3rd time.
The Wizards will then host 2008 FMF Clausura Champions Santos Laguna at CommunityAmerica Ballpark Sunday, June 28 at 5:30 p.m. CT to wrap-up group play. Santos features Mexico National Team goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez, Mexico National Team defender Fernando Arce, Mexico National Team forward Matias Vuoso and Ecuadorian National Team forward Christian Benitez. The match will represent Special Game A in Kansas City season ticket packages. Single-game tickets are priced the same as a home MLS match. Kansas City is 2-4-2 all-time against teams from Mexico, including a 1-4-1 record in competitive games. The Wizards are 1-3 all-time against Santos Laguna after meeting the team in the 2001 Copa Merconorte and the 2002 CONCACAF Champions Cup. Santos eliminated the Wizards from Copa Merconorte with two wins, but Kansas City advanced the following year in the CONCACAF Champions Cup on the strength of a 2-0 home victory. The Wizards defeated partner club Atlas AC in a home friendly 2-1 last July and trained at the Atlas facilities in Guadalajara during the 2009 preseason.
For the 2009 edition of SuperLiga, competitive criteria determined which four teams would represent their respective leagues. The top four MLS teams based on their 2008 regular season record, who are not competing in CONCACAF Champions League in 2009, qualified for SuperLiga 2009: Chicago Fire, New England Revolution, Chivas USA and the Kansas City Wizards.
The invited FMF clubs, representing Mexico’s Primera División, was based on their record (highest number of points) in the 2008 Clausura and 2008 Apertura season, except those teams that qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League. For the FMF clubs who declined on the invitation, the next club in line based on points was invited. Therefore, the four participating Mexican clubs are: 2008 playoff contender San Luis, Santos Laguna led by national team star Oswaldo Sanchez, Tigres UNAL led by Lucas Lobos, and Atlas, the young and exciting club led by former Mexican national team coach Ricardo Lavolpe.
SuperLiga started in 2007, with CF Pachuca winning the inaugural tournament in penalty kicks over the Los Angeles Galaxy. In 2008, the all-MLS final saw the New England Revolution defeat the Houston Dynamo in another memorable set of penalty kicks.
The entire 2009 tournament will be broadcast live primetime by TeleFutura Network in the United States. English-language broadcasts will be available live on SuperLiga2009.com. HARTMAN CLAIMS CONSECUTIVE MINUTES PLAYED RECORD:
Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman recently added another MLS record to his already impressive resume. Hartman has played every minute in goal for the Wizards since he joined the team prior to the 2007 season. Including the latter part of 2006 while with the Los Angeles Galaxy, Hartman has not missed a minute of play in his last 91 MLS matches. Hartman’s consecutive minute streak of 8190 minutes surpasses the previous mark set by goalkeeper Matt Reis of New England, 7,920 minutes (2005-2008). Hartman is also nearing 2nd place on the MLS lists for consecutive games started and consecutive games played. Hartman already occupies 2nd place in both spots, set from 2002-2005 while with the Galaxy.
Hartman is already Major League Soccer’s all-time leader in games played as a goalkeeper (312), wins (141), saves (1,158) and shutouts (80). He ranks 2nd all-time in minutes played (27,945) and 3rd in games played (312).

The Kansas City Wizards host 1st place Chivas USA Saturday, May 23 on the night of Kansas City’s second-ever Dog’s Night at the Wizards event. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their favorite canine friend out to CommunityAmerica Ballpark to watch the Wizards take on League-leading Chivas USA. Dog/owner ticket packages cost just $30, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Kansas City area animal shelters. Each ticket order must include a Dog’s Night at the Wizards registration form, a signed waiver and a copy of the dog’s up-to-date immunization record. Gary Lezak of KSHB-TV, Holly Starr of 38 the Spot, Jenny Matthews of Mix 93.3, and Bryan Truta of 105.1 Jack FM will be on hand to help judge the Three Dog Bakery “Best-Dressed Dog” contest prior to the game, with the winners presented at halftime. WIZARDS WELCOME COURAGEOUS MIGUEL JIMENEZ LAST WEDNESDAY:
Last Wednesday, Wyandotte High School senior Miguel Jimenez took part in the ceremonial first kick with Wizards captain Jimmy Conrad. Jimenez, an avid soccer player and fan, was unable to participate for his school last fall due to painful growths on his leg. Jimenez and Dr. Howard Rosenthal attended the match together after Rosenthal performed pro bono surgery for Jimenez through the Sisters of Charity in Leavenworth. In addition to taking the first kick, Jimenez was a part of the official team photo with Rosenthal and Wizards owner Neal Patterson. SPANISH-LANGUAGE COACH’S SHOW AIRS THURSDAY ON 1480 AM:
Wizards Head Coach Curt Onalfo will join Enrique Morales Thursday at 5 p.m. CT for his weekly Spanish-language coach’s show on Ke Buena 1480 AM. Spanish-speaking fans are encouraged to listen for a recap of last week’s games against D.C. United and Columbus Crew and a look ahead to Saturday’s tilt against Real Salt Lake.

What: Dynamo the Dragon participated in Fiesta KC activities, mingling with the kids and entertaining families that attended the fun-filled event.

What: The Kansas City Wizards will be joining forces with St. Theresa’s grad and U23 National Team member, Lauren Fowlkes, for a tribute ticket sales fundraiser with the school. The Wizards players and Lauren will be on hand to sign autographs for the students and promote the program.

Where: Franke Soccer Fields, Lee’s Summit, MO
What: Jabali FC soccer players will have the opportunity to get some pointers from a pro, as Adam Cristman will “pop-in” to help with their practice and talk to the children about teamwork.

Where: Swope Park Training Facility, Kansas City, MO
What: Dynamo the Dragon will attend Brookside Soccer’s End-of-the-Season Fun Night. He will be kicking the ball around with the little ones and congratulating them on their successful seasons.
WIZARDS, CAULDRON HOLD PASSBACK DRIVE THURSDAY:
The Kansas City Wizards and their supporters’ section, The Cauldron, are excited to take part in the US Soccer Foundation’s Passback Program. The Passback Drive is a grassroots initiative with a goal of increasing the collection of new and gently used gear and equipment by 40% for disadvantaged and “at-risk” soccer communities nationally and abroad. Each season, the soccer equipment drive will be held on the Kansas City Wizards official Passback Night from the time the gates open until the start of the game
The 2009 Passback Drive will be held before most home games. Collection bins will be placed at each gate and items will be accepted once the gates open. Make sure to bring your donations early. Please come out and support the 2009 Passback Drive. Family budgets are tight and there is a lot of need in the Kansas City area. You can help make a difference.
