The Kansas City Wizards will look to re-assert themselves into the thick of the 2008 MLS Cup Playoff race Sunday with a 2 p.m. match-up against the Chicago Fire. Kansas City is currently two points out of the final MLS Cup Playoff spot and will know its situation fully heading into Sunday’s game, as all contending teams will have played earlier in the week. Sunday’s match features a unique doubleheader, as the reserve teams from each team will play shortly following the conclusion of the MLS match. Fans are encouraged to stay after the MLS game and watch your KCW Reserves battle for the MLS Reserve Division title.

Sunday’s Match to Feature Rare Doubleheader

Sunday as the Wizards look to move up in the race for the 2008 MLS Cup Playoffs, fans will get the opportunity to see a rare Major League Soccer doubleheader. After the Wizards and Fire first teams face of at 2 p.m. CT at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, reserve teams from both teams will square of at 4:30 p.m. CT. Fans are allowed and encouraged to remain inside the stadium to watch the reserve match, as the Wizards are challenging for the MLS Reserve Division crown with an impressive 6-1-2 record. A limited number of concession stands will remain open during the second match for fans choosing to stay.

Kansas City Wizards Present All-Star Autograph Experience for October 5 Match Against Chicago Fire

The Kansas City Wizards will host an exciting post-game opportunity and ticket package for their match against the Chicago Fire Sunday. Fans who purchase a ticket package that includes two 2008 home matches, a 2009 ticket deposit and the opportunity to attend an autograph session that features Jimmy Conrad, Kevin Hartman, Josh Wolff, Brian McBride and Diego Gutierrez. Proceeds from purchase of the package go toward the purchase of Malaria nets by Nothing but Nets.

Fans that purchase the 2008/2009 ticket package will receive:

Striker Josh Wolff up for Sierra Mist Goal of the Week

Wizards Striker Josh Wolff has been nominated for the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week for his spectacular bicycle-kick goal Saturday. Wolff slammed home an acrobatic tally in the second half of Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Chivas USA. A Wizards player is up for the award for the third straight week, after Davy Arnaud won two weeks ago and Kevin Souter was nominated last week.

Wizards 50-50 Raffle Sunday to Benefit Youth Coach of Davy Arnaud, Lance Watson

Nederland, Texas, home of Wizards midfielders Davy Arnaud and Lance Watson, was one community devastated by Hurricane Ike earlier this month. At this Sunday’s match, the Wizards will hold a 50-50 raffle to help the former youth coach of both players whose home was destroyed in the storm. Brian Arendale, coach at Elite Soccer Club, instructed both Arnaud and Watson early in their careers. Earlier this month, his home was knocked down in the storm surge from Ike. The Wizards will donate half the proceeds from a raffle conducted this Sunday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark as the Wizards take on the Chicago Fire. The remaining proceeds will go to one lucky fan whose ticket is pulled at random.

Kansas City Wizards to Honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month for October 11 Match, Courtesy of American Family Insurance

The Kansas City Wizards are teaming up with American Family Insurance for Breast Cancer Awareness Month activities surrounding their October 11 match against the New England Revolution. The Young Survival Coalition (YSC) will be the main beneficiary of that night’s events, but all Breast Cancer Awareness groups are encouraged to take advantage of a special fundraising opportunity through Wizards tickets. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. CT at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

As part of the game-day experience, fans will be able to purchase pink soccer balls and pins with proceeds going to YSC. Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman will also wear a pink jersey for the match that the Wizards will sell via auction at www.kcwizards.com. American Family Insurance will match the final sale price, and all proceeds will be donated to YSC. In addition, American Family has purchased 50 tickets for the match and donated them so that a group from YSC can attend free of charge. They will also sponsor a halftime “Kicks for Cancer” competition, with money donated to YSC for every shot made by a fan participant.

While YSC are the primary beneficiaries of the evening’s events, any Breast Cancer Awareness organization can take part in a special ticket promotion. Through the deal, a portion of proceeds of tickets purchased through an organization will be donated by the Wizards to help fundraising efforts.

The Jimmy Conrad Show Live from McFadden’s Wednesday

The Jimmy Conrad Show will be hosted by Jimmy Conrad and voice of the Sean Wheelock live from McFadden’s in Kansas City’s Power and Light District Wednesday, October 1 at 7 p.m. CT. This week, Conrad and Wheelock will chat about the MLS Cup Playoff race and be joined by a guest from around Major League Soccer.

Wizards Weekly Press Conference Held FRIDAY at Swope Park

The Wizards weekly press conference will be held on Friday this week and start at 12:00 p.m. CT at the pavilion adjacent to the team’s Swope Park Training Center. The conference was moved from Thursday because the team will train Thursday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Head Coach Curt Onalfo and a player will be the guests this week. Planet Sub sandwiches and cookies will be provided to all media members who attend. With back to back wins the Wizards are back in the playoff race and looking better…. though that was against two teams that were on the bottom their respective conferences. 

This week KC take on Chivas USA.  The little Goats are currently in second in the MLS West but have just 1 more point than KC does.   Wins by Colorado, Salt Lake and FC Dallas, all results that would greatly help the Wizards will crash Chivas USA to 5th in the West.

As noted, KC are coming of back to back 2-0 wins.  This is the first time they have won back to back games since starting the season 2-0-0.  Chivas were the first team to win at Rice-Eccles last week, but were trounced 4-0 the week before in New England.   The little Goats recent home MLS record is 2-3-0 (WDL).  Last time they lost at home was to Chicago in June.  For KC, their only win on the road all season was in Chicago back in April.

The last game between KC and Chivas was one where KC jumped out to a 3-0 lead and had to hold on for a 3-2 win.  This was at home.   The Wizards also blew two other games late after this meltdown.  However KC has added Herculez Gomez and Abe Thompson since then, and moved Davy Arnaud and Jack Jewsbury to the midfield.   This has helped KC to re-focus their hold on games and put together more complete games overall.

Unfortunately Jack Jewsbury will not be in the lineup tonight due to yellow card accumulation.  Rather it should be Kurt Morsink out there with Davy.  I expect the rest of the lineup to remain the same as it was last week (and the week before).

It looks like only Myers is out with “injury” for KC; he has mono.  For Chivas, they have a laundry list of injuries and several that are questionable/doubtful for the game: Galindo, Bornstein, Nagamura, Talley and Zotinca.  Three of them played last week.

Chivas also have a roster full of former Wizards players.  Most recent addition is Sasha Victorine.  They have Talley, Shavar Thomas and Alex Zotinca.  I think we could see possibly three of them on the field tonight.

It should be a beautiful day in Carson, CA.  Forecast says mid 70’s for game time, no chance of rain and low winds.

If KC can keep up their newly found attacking form from the last two weeks then I can see a one or two goal victory.

Two Victories for KC

Saturday night the Wizards moved closer to the playoffs.  In a game that played out a lot like the LA Galaxy game, the Wizards got rolling late in the first half and then got two second half goals for the 2-0 win over Toronto FC.  Josh Wolff was taken down in the box and Jack Jewsbury scored on the ensuing PK in the 63rd minute.   Then in the 79th Wolff and Espinoza set up rookie and tryout winner Kevin Souter who chipped/floated the ball over Sutton.  Souter’s goal is up for Goal of the Week on MLSNet.  This was Kevin’s first goal of his career.

The KC defense was pretty strong in this game.   The boys only allowed three shots the entire night, though the set piece by Guevara was damn good.  TFC had no shots on goal.  That is pretty amazing right there if you ask me.  Probably speaks more to TFC ineptness though.    So, no saves for Hartman.

On offense KC had 14 shots and 5 on goal.  Sutton made a few nice saves.  The buildup to the PK and even Souter’s goal was great.  You could almost anticipate a KC goal.  They just kept attacking and regrouping.  This is more of what we have wanted to see all year.

My Player of the Game this week will go to Josh Wolff.  He was all over the field tonight.  Drew the penalty, assisted on the Souter goal, actually provided some energy on the offsense.  He’s stepped it up the last two games.  Second player will go to Abe Thompson.  Finally some presence up top, might have finished the game had he not dinged his shoulder (Souter came in for him).  Third player will be Souter for his first goal and a very nice one at that.

Win puts KC 1 point behind DC United, who lost to LA 5-2, and three points behind NY, who lost to Cbus on Thursday.  And a special prize too… KC are now only 6 points behind Chicago who where demolished by FC Dallas 4-1 on Sunday.  Right now KC are 1 point out fo the playoffs.  Next week the Wizards travel to LA to play Chivas USA(2nd in the West at 33 points).  DC will play Sunday against FC Dallas.  NY takes on Colorado.  With the right results KC could be in the thick of controlling their playoff position and looking at three home games in row.

One not for the Chivas game.  Jewsbury will be unavailable due to yellow accumulation.  I expect we’ll see Zavagnin or Morsink alongside Davy next week.

Reserves destroy TFC

The second win this weekend was a 6-0 demolition of the TFC reserves.  Ivan Trujillo got a hattrick, Ryan Pore added two more while Carlos Marinelli got his first reserve goal.  KC now have 6 wins, 1 loss and 2 draws.

The KCW Reserves improved to 6-1-2 Sunday morning with a 6-0 victory over Toronto FC Reserves at Kansas City’s Swope Park Training Center. The Wizards exploded for five goals after halftime and goalkeeper Eric Kronberg recorded his second shutout of the Reserve Division season.
 
Kansas City opened the scoring before halftime in the 37th minute through Colombian forward Ivan Trujillo. Central midfielder Kerry Zavagnin put left back Lance Watson through behind the defense with a long pass from the middle of the park, and Watson played a low cross from the end line back to Trujillo at the back post. Trujillo tapped home from close range to put the Wizards ahead 1-0.
 
Kansas City then exploded for five goals after the break to climb within two points of 1st place in the MLS Reserve Division standings. Kansas City’s leading Reserve Division scorer Ryan Pore tapped home a low cross from Claudio Lopez in the 47th minute, then set up another Trujillo goal in the 54th minute.
 
Pore took a pass from Zavagnin near the half line, held off a defender and spun the ball forward to Trujillo behind the defense. Trujillo carried the ball to the top of the 18-yard area and bent the ball home with his left foot at the back post for a 3-0 Kansas City advantage.
 
Pore again found Trujillo four minutes later to complete the hat trick. Pore carried the ball up the middle of the park, eluding two defenders before lofting a pass diagonally over the defense to Trujillo at the back post. Trujillo took the chance on the half volley and rifled another left-footed effort underneath the crossbar for a 4-0 lead.
 
Argentine playmaker Carlos Marinelli added to the score line in the 65th minute when he bent a free kick on goal from the right flank that TFC goalkeeper Brian Edwards bobbled over the goal line. Pore then finished the scoring in the 80th minute by unleashing a 25-yard rocket into the lower-left corner of goal for his team-leading 7th tally of the Reserve Division season. He ranks third in the League in goals, behind former Wizards forward Yura Movsisyan of Real Salt Lake and Kyle Brown of Houston Dynamo.
 
Kansas City’s next reserve match comes Sunday, October 5 versus the Chicago Fire at 4 p.m. CT Kansas City and Chicago will play a doubleheader that day at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Toronto’s reserve squad is also in action October 5 against the New York Red Bulls.

Tests Reveal Mononucleosis for Rookie Defender Chance Myers
 
The Kansas City Wizards confirmed Monday that rookie defender Chance Myers has been suffering from Mononucleosis for the last six-eight weeks. Myers, taken first overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, has appeared in 10 matches (seven starts) despite the illness. Myers has also been suffering from Strep throat for the last week, a side effect from a weakened immune system due to Mono. Myers was unavailable for this weekend’s MLS match and Reserve Division match due to the illnesses.
 
United States Olympian Muna Lee Appeared Saturday at Wizards Match
 
United States Olympian and Kansas City native Muna Lee appeared Saturday as the Wizards defeated Toronto FC 2-0 to climb within one point of the final playoff spot. Lee signed autographs for fans prior to the match and was the special guest of Wizards ownership group OnGoal for the game. Lee also appeared last Friday at Wizards practice.

Zona Wizards, the weekly Spanish-language radio and TV show, will air live this Thursday at 2 p.m. on La Playa 1480 AM and Time Warner Cable Channel 5. Hosted by Enrique Morales and Raul Villegas, Zona Wizards will feature a player each week.

Wizards Weekly, Kansas City’s weekly magazine show covering the Wizards will feature Head Coach Curt Onalfo and a player each week. Metro Sports will air Wizards Weekly three times per week.

Four Wizards Take Part in Soccer-Volleyball Fundraiser Tuesday

Where: Westminster Academy, Overland Park, KS
What: To help raise money for their school programs, four Kansas City Wizards players will be taking on Westminster Academy students in a Soccer-Volleyball match.  While the students will play the game using their hands, the Kansas City Wizards players will only be allowed to use legal soccer touches, which include their feet, thighs, chest, and head. No hands allowed!
 
Mascot Dynamo Appears Friday at Belinder Elementary School
 
Who: Mascot Dynamo the Dragon

Where: Belinder Elementary, Prairie Village, KS
What: Dynamo the Dragon will be participating in Belinder Elementary’s Walk-A-Thon to help promote the school’s biggest fundraiser. He will be there to pump up the crowd and add extra spirit.
