First a comeback last week in Chicago then a 1-0 home win over NY and the Wizards move into first place in the MLS East with 10 points. Just a few weeks ago it was wondered whether or not KC would start off the first five games with losses. Now they look like a totally different team. Well, they are still somewhat an “ugly” team but they aren’t losing now. 🙂
Down 2-0 in Chicago the Wizards rallied for a 2-2 draw on two goals by Josh Wolff (about the only thing he did the whole game, but hey it was 2 goals!) and some tremendous saves by Kevin Hartman.
On Thursday KC hosted NY. Gomez was taken down in the box in the second minute, Carlos Johnson saw a deserved straight red, and Lopez converted the Penalty Kick against Jon Conway. Wizards up 1-0. At this point I think everyone in the stands were wondering how many goals KC would score. NY has only scored 3 goals all season and none on the road while giving up (now) 5 goals. Plus KC was up a man … although when KC was up a man against Seattle the Wizards played like they were down a man. Well, we didn’t score any more but we didn’t give up any either. At least this time KC played with some urgency about scoring. The Wizards had 13 shots and 6 on goal. Jon Conway made some really good saves. Hartman had to make a couple of saves but otherwise there was not much offense from NY. Juan Pablo Angel did nothing until the end of the game … I was actually worried he’d pull a “Josh Wolff in Chicago” moment but thankfully he did not.
Jack Jewsbury left the game with, I think, a concussion. Not sure if he’ll start on Sunday or not. Micheal Harrington came in for him(32nd minute) and was all over the field. Lance Watson played out of his mind, even out jumping Conrad several times to head away crosses.
Again though KC really has to work on passing. Too much giving the ball away and lazy passes. If they can fix that then they’ll win a lot of games this season.
Player of the Game – Chicago. Kevin Hartman. Second player was Josh Wolff. Third was Lance Watson.
Player of the Game – NY. (This one much harder!). Jimmy Conrad for his coverage of JPA. Second player Lance Watson. Third player Herculez Gomez.
I don’t think that many thought much of the play of Gomez but he was involved in a lot of the attack. So was Lopez for that matter. I thought Jimmy redeemed himself from the Chicago game and had a big task covering Juan Pablo Angel. Harrington deserved honorable mention or something. He needs to start.
Next for the Wizards are Toronto FC on the road … on Sunday. Will DeRosario play for TFC? What about Jewsbury for KC. I think we’ll see a lineup change for KC this game. Hirsig can play d-mid and if Jack is healthy to go I’d still just put him on the bench, at least for this game.
TFC won 1-0 on Wednesday with a goal from Guevara. Hopefully KC can neutralize him on Sunday. After this last stretch of four games from KC I am optimistic about a victory at BMO Field.
