The Wizards have their final regular season game this weekend. Actually, so do the Reserves. Both games will be in New England.
The senior team will be trying to capture 4th in the East Playoffs. KC manages that with a victory. A draw would also be fine so long as DC draws or loses. Even a loss, combined with a DC loss, will get KC 4th. That 4th place finish will mean a date with the Supporter Shield winning Columbus Crew. But first we have to play New England.
This is the third meeting with the Revolution this season, the other two meetings were in KC. NE won 3-1 back in the 3rd game of the season and the Wizards won 1-0 two weeks ago. The Rev’s have been abysmal for a while. In the last 5 games they are 0-2-3 (WDL). They are 2-4-6 (WDL) since the SuperLiga Final. But they are 6-4-4 at home this season. Though throughout history the Wizards are better in New England having an 8-5 advantage in wins(there are also 4 draws). This season KC is 1-5-8 (WDL) on the road and have dropped 5 straight on the road.
New England will be without Cristman and Ralston. KC will be without Josh Wolff (hopefully for just this week) and also Watson. Abe Thompson left the game due to injury last week but is supposed to be healthy enough to play.
So, should KC run out the starting lineup? Should they rest players? Should they try to maintain their form? Does the team care if they play Houston or Columbus in the first round?
Of course, we fans want to see a victory. Going for the win probably means that Kevin Hartman and Jimmy Conrad play every minute of the season. Also going for the win, and assuming we get it, will give KC 42 points on the year. If Chivas do not win this weekend that 42 points would have KC tied for 2nd in the West. Also would put KC just 1 point out of 3rd in the East. Standings here.
Also, just noticed this, KC is 4th in defense this season. Given up 38 goals. Only three teams better. And depending on how many DC put on Columbus, if any, the Wizards could be third in defense. Now, the offense needs some work. Only San Jose scored less goals.
Anyway, for the game I expect to see the same lineup as last weekend. Hopefully we’ll see all 3 subs used to make sure at least some players aren’t over extended. Besides, I like watching Espinoza play. And I’d love to see Trujillo get another chance to score before his time is up here.
Seems that the game against DC United Reserves will not be made up or forfeited. So, KC and Houston go into the final Reserve match as the only two teams with a chance to win it. Over at Hillcrest Road they have the possible results. It will be decided on points-per-game basis. Basically we need a win and Houston needs to lose or tie. If we draw, then Houston needs to lose. KC and NE play after the senior game on Saturday night. Houston plays their reserves game on Sunday.
