Inaugural Mayor’s Night Kicks Tournament Reaches Knockout Stage With Quarterfinal Matches Tonight

( August 7, 2008 ) – After 12 match days, 24 matches, 123 goals scored and participation by 16 teams of 20 players each, the inaugural Mayor’s Night Kicks tournament has reached the elimination rounds. Only eight teams remain in the tournament, a collaboration between the Kansas City Wizards ownership group OnGoal, LLC, the Mayor’s Office of the City of Kansas City, Missouri and the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners. The tournament was designed to provide an affordable, positive outlet for underprivileged men ages 18-25. Registration costs were limited to $200 for a team of 20.

The final eight games will take place over the next two weeks, with the 3rd place game and championship game televised live on Metro Sports Friday, August 22 at 8 p.m. at 10 p.m., respectively. For more information on the tournament including a complete schedule, standings and goal-scoring information, visit All matches are played on Field 3 of the Kansas City Wizards Swope Park Training Center, a brand-new lighted, synthetic-grass field.

“We’ve got to give kudos to the Mayor. This tournament has gone even better than we could have expected,” OnGoal CEO Robb Heineman said. “The crowds have been great, the soccer has been exciting and the community has really embraced the event. We are proud to put the two final games on television, along with our broadcast partner Metro Sports, so the rest of the city can see how much this tournament means to those involved.”

“We look forward to televising the final two games from the inaugural Mayor’s Night Kicks tournament,” Metro Sports General Manager John Denison said. “We want to do everything we can to support our soccer partner, the Kansas City Wizards and our great city on this exciting new program.”

“This first-year tournament is going amazingly well,” Manager of Recreation for KCMO Parks and Rec Lisa Nichols said. “The play has been extremely competitive, the community has gotten behind the teams involved and it has been a lot of fun for everyone involved. This tournament was developed after the community identified an area of need for young men ages 18-25. Year one of Mayor’s Night Kicks has been an extremely successful partnership between the International Soccer League, the Somali Foundation, the Kansas City Wizards, Kansas City Parks and Rec and the Mayor’s Office.”

Mayor’s Night Kicks began on July 16 with two Group A matches and has been played four nights a week over the past three weeks. Eight teams remain in contention for the Kansas City Cup. The final three rounds will take place over the next three weeks. See full schedule below. The champion, runner-up and third place teams will be awarded trophies and introduced at halftime at a Kansas City Wizards home game Saturday, August 23 against FC Dallas at 7 p.m. CT.
