The Wizards travel to Qwest Field to take on the Seattle Sounders in the US Open Cup Quarterfinals today.
KC is coming off a 1-1 result down in Dallas on Independence Day. The Sounders are coming off a 0-1 loss in Charleston(first in USL-1) on Saturday. KC are 7th in the MLS East at 4-5-5 while Seattle are 4th in USL-1 at 4-8-3 (WDL). KC defeated the Carolina Railhawks 4-2 AET last week in the USOC 3rd round while Seattle downed CD Chivas USA 2-0.
Weather for the game will be very nice. Low 70’s by kickoff, sunny weather and no chance for rain. Qwest is not Seattle’s regular home field this year but it will be for next years MLS team, Seattle Sounders FC.
Officially KC only has one injury – Kevin Souter. But Carlos Marinelli is also hurting and probably won’t be playing in the game. Also it seems that KC will again play a reserves type lineup – this from KC Futbol. If a bunch of the starters won’t even make the trip then that means we won’t have a strong bench for the game. Last week the strong bench is what sparked KC to a come from behind win. Coach Onalfo’s big worry though seems to be that in two days KC has a home game against New York and does not want to wear out the players. OK, I understand that, however the Wizards are three wins from playing in the 2009 Concacaf Champions League if they win the USOC. Seattle is not a team to trifle with. If KC goes with the lineup from last week then they really will have to go for early goals. Luckily KC has been more attack minded the last few games. But if they go down 0-2 like against Carolina then KC won’t have to worry about anymore Tuesday night games.
You can follow the game online at USLLive.com. The game should start at 9 pm local time.
Edit: Adding a Rusert MLS article. Open Cup high stakes for Wizards. Onalfo: “We’re going to put a group of players on the field that is capable of winning the game. Our goal is to go to Seattle, take the game to them, and get ourselves into the semifinal”
