Opening Day II: The Return

The Wizards return to CommunityAmerica Ballpark for the first time since April 12th.  Nine weeks have passed since KC left town after a 0-0 draw with Houston and 7 points in a 4-game home stand.  There’s been a bit of a turn of fortunes for the team since then though.  Only 5 points in 6 games away from home.  Only four goals scored.  The team hasn’t scored multiple goals since the 3-2 home win over Colorado.  The midfield has fallen apart and we’ve seen a lot of long passes that from the defense, bypassing the midfield.  Not really the kind of passing this team needs to win.  Also a formation tweak.  Team has gone from a 442 Diamond to a 442 Flat midfield.  It’s supposed to bring the wide mids into the attack more but last week the team played to a 0-0 draw with RSL resulting in just 7 shots.

This Saturday will feel like a second home opener.  The opponent are the Columbus Crew who are in 3rd place on 19 points.  The Crew have already defeated KC this season, 2-1, on May 3rd.  The Wizards are in last place in the East on 11 points.

While KC have been struggling, mainly due to the road trip, the Crew have had their issues also.  They have not scored an MLS goal since May 10th.  Since they defeated the Wizards the Crew are 1-1-3(W-D-L) only beating lowly San Jose(10 points, last in West).

Columbus also have some injury concerns.  And they’ll be missing two other players for non-injury issues.  Frankie Hejduk will be with Team USA and Brad Evans is suspended for a game.  The other injuries are to Hendrickson, Miglioranzi, Moffat and Padula.  KC have three players on the injury list but none that would affect the lineup or bench.

Here’s the official mlsnet preview.   We get the honor of Terry Vaughn officiating.  Hopefully he won’t be an impact on the game.  Crosses Fingers…🙂

Rob Rusert has a story about KC coming home.  Rusert has quotes from several players.

There have been two other stories on KC this week.  One on Jon Leathers by Rusert and on in the KC Star about Wizards goal scoring by Bob Luder.  In regards to Leathers, he may very well start over Myers on Saturday.

From the C-bus perspective, here’s a story from today on the Crew.

Ok, back in the KC Metro.  Weather has been much warmer recently.  Here’s the forecast for tomorrow.  Should be low 80’s, wind at 10 mph and no chance of rain.   Of course it could all change.  It is supposed to storm on Sunday and it’s possible that could get here Saturday night.

As for the lineup against the Crew.  My stab for this week will be: Sealy-Lopez up top.  Carlos and Davy wide.  Jack and Kerry in the middle.   Harrington on the left.  Jimmy in the middle.   I am gonna guess that Leathers starts at right back (though I think he looks good at left back too). This is not to say that Myers isn’t playing well.  Just that Leathers is.  Then, will it by Tyson Wahl or Aaron Hohlbein along side Jimmy?  For now I will go with Tyson, but Aaron played well in the last two starts.  And Hartman in the goal of course.

Go Blue.
