It was a very exciting game in NY as KC scored early but allowed the Red Bulls to notch a late goal for share of points.
Jimmy Conrad headed home his third, and team leading, goal of the season off a corner kick from Carlos Marinelli in the 20th. I thought KC looked very good in midfield. Possession was much better than in past games. Carlos Marinelli was very strong with the ball and Sasha Victorine was instrumental in possession. Going into the second half KC hadthe better of the play. Kevin Hartman was making some good saves/plays. Jewsbury had anice goal mouth clear in a set of events that probably should have led to a NY goal in the first half. The scene was repeated in the second half with “heart-in-your-throat” action that involved Victorine with a goal line clearance.
In the second half of the game NY had the better of the play and the result was 20 shots overall to KC’s 12. Hartman ended up with 7 saves but unfortunately NY got a goal in the 81st by Borman; just minutes after going down to 10 men when Dave van den Bergh elbowed Davy Arnaud.
Sasha Victorine made his first start of the season. He was replaced after 79 minutes by Kurt Morsink. Kerry Zavagnin did not touch the field this week as Jack Jewsbury played holding midfield role for the second consecutive game. Ryan Pore also started this week, but on the right side. Colombano came on for him late. Davy Arnaud also saw the field when he subbed in at striker for Scott Sealy. Arnaud played very well when in. I’d say it’s a decent bet that Davy could soon start up top with Lopez.
Now for the Players of the Game. This is a hard one because there are three spots but four worthy players. Player of the Game I feel is obviously Carlos Marinelli. He was strong on the ball and had a commanding presence in the game. One of his best performances. I am going to give Sasha Victorine the 2nd player for this game (3 pts) for his play on the field. Sasha was impressive in his performance which only helps KC in the long run as very good players battle for starting spots. I know that it seems that Jimmy should get a spot for his goal and defensive play but it’s hard to ignore the outstanding job that Hartman did with his 7 saves. So the third spot(1pt) goes to Kevin Hartman.
Note: from the previous game against C-bus I still have to give out 1-2-3. Lopez was player of the game, 2nd was Marinelli and 3rd was Eloy Colombano. Yes, all points Argentine.
Total points stand at: Lopez 20, Hartman 14, Marinelli 11, Conrad 10, Jewsbury 6, Victorine 4, Trujillo3, Sealy 2, Colombano and Wahl 1.
Next up for KC are the LA Galaxy and then Real Salt Lake. KC are still in 6th place in the East and may not move up the East standings even winning those games.
Reserve result: KC reserves won 2-1 when Pizarro scored 3 minutes from time. KC now has 3 wins and 2 draws in reserve play. Their 11 points are most in MLS reserve division. Eloy Colombano scored the opening goal in the first half. NY tied it up on a 72nd minute PK.
