Kansas City, Mo. – UMKC men’s soccer head coach Rick Benben announced today that Diego Rojas has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his education and play soccer for the Kangaroos. The 5-6, 143-lb forward is the third member of Benben’s recruiting class for the 2008 season.
“Diego has some real special qualities as a player, and we are looking forward to having him join us this fall,” said Benben. “He is going to fit into our team in a very positive way. Signing a player from a successful club like Solar SC is a good win for our program and gives us the opportunity to broaden our recruiting base throughout Texas and in the larger clubs in the Midwest.”
The Bogota, Columbia, native helped his Solar 90 squad to a quarterfinal appearance in the 2007 Dallas Cup, one of the most prestigious international youth soccer tournaments in the world. The squad swept through group play with a 2-0-1 record before falling to eventual tournament champions LA Rampage FC. Roajs also powered his team to the championship at the 2007 Score at the Shore tournament and a runner-up finish in the 2007 Texas North State Cup.
Before joining Solar, he was a member of the Texas Lightning 89 squad, leading the team to the championship game of the Puma Cup in both 2005 and 2006.
The son of Alberto Rojas and Bianca Charria, he plans to major in engineering at UMKC.
