The Kansas City Wizards continue their first SuperLiga tournament Wednesday with a contest against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium. The Wizards will postpone their weekly press conference to Friday at the team’s Swope Park Training Center due to the travel schedule. WIZARDS TO FACE MINNESOTA THUNDER IN OPEN CUP JUNE 30:
The Kansas City Wizards will enter the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday, June 30 when the Wizards will face the Minnesota Thunder (USL-1) at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. If Minnesota wins, they will host the Wizards June 30. Last season, Kansas City made the quarterfinals of the tournament. The Wizards lost in penalty kicks to Seattle Sounders (then of USL-1) at Qwest Field after a 0-0 tie through regulation and extra time.
Should the Wizards win next Tuesday, they will either travel to face Seattle for the second straight season or host the Portland Timbers (USL-1). Below are the potential quarterfinal matches in Kansas City’s group:

WIZARDS HOST KANSAS CITY COLLEGE SHOWCASE JULY 25-26:
The Kansas City Wizards, Raytown Soccer Club and William Jewell College will host the 2nd annual Kansas City College Showcase July 25-26. The event will take place at William Jewell College and the Wizards’ Swope Park Training Center. KCW Juniors U-16 and U-18 teams will take part in the showcase. Registration costs $800 per team and includes a voucher for a Kansas City Wizards ticket during the 2009 season. ARNAUD WINS GOAL OF THE WEEK:
Kansas City Wizards midfielder Davy Arnaud won last week’s MLS Goal of the Week award for a beautiful combination play that led to the Wizards’ first goal in a 3-1 win over the New England Revolution June 13. Arnaud took a feed from Herculez Gomez, then played a give-and-go with Claudio Lopez inside the penalty area for an easy finish. On the play, Arnaud broke a tie with teammate Josh Wolff to move alone into 3rd place on Kansas City’s all-time goals list. Arnaud has now scored 37 goals during his eight-year career, all of which has been spent in Kansas City colors.
WIZARDS ANNOUNCE GAME DATE CHANGE FOR ROAD MATCH AT D.C. UNITED:
The Kansas City Wizards have announced that their match originally scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 8 at D.C. United will be moved to Wednesday, Sept. 9 at RFK Stadium at 6:30 p.m. CT. The match will still be televised live locally on Metro Sports in English and Time Warner Cable Channel 5 in Spanish. D.C. United will host Spanish superpower Real Madrid Aug. 9 at FedEx Field.
THE JIMMY CONRAD SHOW AIRS FROM TANNER’S IN SHAWNEE THIS MONTH:
The Jimmy Conrad Show, presented by Budweiser, will air Wednesday night on Sports Radio 810 WHB from 7-8 p.m. CT and simulcast online at kcwizards.com. (June 21, 2009) – The Kansas City Wizards (0-0-1, 1 pt) tied Mexican partner club FC Atlas (0-0-1, 1 pt) 0-0 Sunday in stifling heat at Robert R. Hermann Stadium on the campus of St. Louis University in both team’s SuperLiga opener. The match was played at Hermann Stadium because Kansas City’s home field at CommunityAmerica Ballpark was unavailable. Kansas City outshot Atlas 12-9 with a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made two saves, including an outstanding diving effort to deny a Dario Bottinelli free kick in the 1st half.
Kansas City pushed the game early, forcing Atlas goalkeeper Jose Francisco Canales to make a pair of saves in the 4th and 13th minutes. First, Claudio Lopez took a free kick that was deflected back to him. He took a touch then fired a shot on goal that Canales held. Then in the 13th minute, Gomez turned toward goal after a feed from striker Josh Wolff and shot from the top of the 18. Canales made a diving save, however, to deny the Kansas City midfield. Gomez proved dangerous again in the 21st minute, firing a shot just wide of the back post from 20 yards out.
In the 31st minute, Hartman made a highlight reel save to keep the match level at 0-0. Atlas attacking midfielder Dario Bottinelli drew a foul on Wizards left back Matt Besler 20 yards from goal near the right side of the penalty area. Bottinelli took the ensuing corner kick, bending the ball down over the wall toward the back post. The shot was headed for goal, but Hartman extended fully to tip the shot wide.
Though shots were even in the 2nd half, Kansas City was the more dangerous team. Midfielder and St. Louis University alum Jack Jewsbury hit a shot just over the crossbar in the 52nd minute. Striker Josh Wolff then beat two players with nifty footwork before firing a left-footed shot on goal in the 72nd minute that Canales smothered.
In the 81st minute, Kansas City nearly converted to take a lead when midfielder Roger Espinoza completed a long string of combination passes by slipping substitute forward Abe Thompson through between a pair of Atlas defenders. Thompson was closed down quickly, however, and his shot toward goal flew just wide of the back post.
Atlas nearly responded in the 82nd minute with a goal. After a cross from the left flank, Edgar Pacheco lofted a shot toward the back post from the top of the 18-yard area. His chip attempt sailed just high and wide of the top-left corner, however, and the match ended at 0-0.
The Wizards now travel to play New England in their 2nd SuperLiga match this Wednesday, June 24 at Gillette Stadium. Kansas City will then host Mexican club Santos Laguna Sunday, June 28 at 5:30 p.m. CT at CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Kansas City.
Following the conclusion of SuperLiga group play, Kansas City will play a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match Tuesday, June 30 at the Minnesota Thunder at 7:35 p.m. CT. The Wizards then return to MLS League play Saturday, July 4 against the red-hot Houston Dynamo at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 8 p.m. CT. Fans are encouraged to stay for a fireworks spectacular after the game.

The Kansas City Wizards enter their first SuperLiga tournament this weekend with a Sunday match against partner club FC Atlas on the campus of St. Louis University. Kansas City defeated FC Atlas 2-1 last July in an international friendly at CommunityAmerica Ballpark with a club made up of mostly reserves. The Wizards then spent a portion of their preseason preparations at the Atlas training facilities in Guadalajara, Mexico. The Wizards will hold their weekly press conference Thursday at the team’s Swope Park Training Center. FOOTWEDGE CUP RESCHEDULED FOR AUG. 4:
The Kansas City Soccer Foundation FootWedge Cup was rained out Tuesday. The tournament will be back for its second year at picturesque Loch Lloyd Country Club in South Kansas City on Tuesday, Aug. 4. Golfers from several major companies in the Kansas City area will take part in this unique tournament that brings elements of soccer to the golf course for a day. Wizards players, coaches and staff will also take part. The tournament features holes that include a “FootWedge,” where players are allowed to kick a mini soccer ball to better their drive. All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Kansas City Soccer Foundation, and fans are encouraged to come take part. WIZARDS ANNOUNCE GAME DATE CHANGE FOR ROAD MATCH AT D.C. UNITED:
The Kansas City Wizards announced last week that their match originally scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 8 at D.C. United will be moved to Wednesday, Sept. 9 at RFK Stadium at 6:30 p.m. CT. The match will still be televised live locally on Metro Sports in English and Time Warner Cable Channel 5 in Spanish. D.C. United will host Spanish superpower Real Madrid Aug. 9 at FedEx Field.
THE JIMMY CONRAD SHOW AIRS FROM TANNER’S IN SHAWNEE THIS MONTH:

(June 13, 2009) – The Kansas City Wizards (5-5-4, 19 pts) defeated the New England Revolution (4-4-4, 16 pts) by a 3-1 score line Saturday night in front of a loud sellout crowd at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Kansas City went into halftime leading 3-1, with New England down a man due to a red card by defender Emmanuel Osei in the 31st minute. Midfielder Davy Arnaud scored his 5th goal of the season. Defender Aaron Hohlbein added his 2nd goal, and a New England own goal provided the other tally for the Wizards. Kansas City is now 5-0-2 on the season when scoring first.
The Wizards opened the scoring in the 19th minute through a quick combination play that started with midfielder Herculez Gomez on the left. Gomez played Davy Arnaud through between two defenders near the top of the penalty area. Arnaud slid the ball wide to Claudio Lopez, then broke toward goal from the penalty spot. Lopez returned the pass to Arnaud immediately, allowing Arnaud to tap the ball home from close range for an early 1-0 lead.
New England answered back in the 28th minute through forwards Steve Ralston and Shalrie Joseph. Ralston’s initial corner kick was cleared, but he gathered the ball and sent a bending cross toward the back post. Joseph out-jumped his defender to tuck the ball home inside the post, with Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman arriving just a second late and pushing the ball into the side netting once it already crossed the goal line. New England went down to ten men in the 31st minute when Osei was shown a red card for retaliation against Kansas City forward Claudio Lopez, who had fouled Osei during the run of play.
The Wizards regained a one-goal lead right away, going ahead on a Jeff Larentowicz own goal in the 36th minute. Gomez again created the opportunity, taking a feed from left back Matt Besler and firing a hard shot on goal from 10 yards out. Reis made the initial save, but the ball caromed off backtracking Larentowicz and into the net for a 2-1 Wizards advantage.
Just three minutes later, Kansas City added an insurance goal after a corner kick from Claudio Lopez. Lopez played the ball toward the near post, and team-leading scorer Josh Wolff flicked the ball on frame with his head. Reis made the initial save, but Conrad was there to nod the ball into the path of Hohlbein for a close-range goal. Hohlbein now has two career goals, both during the 2009 season.
The Wizards continued to press in the second half, generating 10 shots for a season-high total of 21 on the game. Goalkeeper Hartman made his 4th and final save of the match in the 85th minute, stopping a shot off the foot of substitute forward Kheli Dube from 20 yards out. Hartman increased his MLS records for career wins (143) and saves (1177) on the night.
Kansas City kicks off SuperLiga against FC Atlas of Mexico’s first division next Sunday, June 21 at 3:30 p.m. CT at Hermann Stadium on the campus of St. Louis University. The Wizards return to MLS League play Saturday, July 4 against the red-hot Houston Dynamo at CommunityAmerica Ballpark at 8 p.m. CT. Yes ladies and gentlemen this weekend at Little Blue Trace (aka RSCs Fields), the Kenyans are coming.
Here is some news you won’t read in the Kansas City Star. I doubt if the Kansas City Kansan , or Hillcrest Road will report or blog about it. Then again, now that I brought it to their attention, they might. But this weekend your Local Kansas City Kenyan community is hosting a Kenyan Soccer tournament. This is a, ever so rare in modern times, grass roots tournament. Unlike the US open Cup, Kohl’s tournament, and the endless 3v3 and 6v6 tournaments around town, this is a sponsor-less tournament. The participants are not having to pay to play. The local Kenyans are paying for everything. Field rental, officials, and even the food is being payed for by individuals within the local community. Did I mention all of this is happening without a sponsor.
This is the way the game was meant to be played. For the love of it. If you are a fan of the game may I suggest you head on down and watch a match or two before heading out to the Wizards match Saturday. If you like to see some exciting fast paced attacking soccer this might be the place for you this weekend.
Now I will admit that I am a fan of the local African Cup. I have made a match or two when our local African community is playing against each other. Just between me and you, this is some very good non-professional soccer. And I highly recommend it.
As stated above, this is so far off everyone’s radar that it probably won’t be covered by the local bloggers or media. I doubt the Wizards are going to show up or offer the players free or discount tickets or even mention the tournament at their match Saturday. So show your support for local competitive soccer and catch a match or two Saturday or Sunday. Spectators are welcome and the ticket price is FREE.
If I don’t see you there Saturday, maybe we can get together Sunday. I’ll be there from 12 o’clock volunteering my time and grill. Stop by and say… “Hi.., I support the beautiful game. Yes I support soccer”
Kansas City’s local Kenyan team will be hostings teams from New Jersey, Oklahoma, St. Louis, Kentucky, Memphis, and Virgina.
