(April 11, 2009) – The Kansas City Wizards defeated Seattle Sounders FC 1-0 Saturday, giving the expansion MLS side their first-ever loss in League play. Kansas City’s goal, a long-range effort off the foot of Davy Arnaud in the 80th minute, was the first goal ever surrendered by Sounders FC. Kansas City goalkeeper Kevin Hartman and the team’s defense posted their second-consecutive clean sheet, extending their shutout streak to 196 minutes. Kansas City has not been shutout in 16 consecutive MLS regular-season games, dating back to August of 2008. The Wizards have posted five shutouts of their own during that stretch.
Kansas City generated their first dangerous chance of the game in the 11th minute after a Hartman goal kick. Hartman played a long ball from his own penalty area that was flicked on by Arnaud. Argentine striker Claudio Lopez got in behind the Seattle defense and ran onto Arnaud’s flick, taking a shot on goal with his first touch. Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller was able to smother the chance, however, to keep the game scoreless.
The complexion of the match changed dramatically in the 29th minute when former U.S. international goalkeeper Keller was shown a straight red card. Wizards midfielder Herculez Gomez was free behind the Seattle defense after a long ball from center back Jimmy Conrad was flicked on by Arnaud. Keller came racing off his line, and as Gomez took a shot toward goal from 24 yards out, Keller slid outside of the penalty area and made contact with the ball with his hands. Referee Abbey Okulaja showed Keller a straight red card for handling the ball outside the penalty area and denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Seattle was forced to play the remainder of the game with ten men, with 3rd string goalkeeper Ben Dragavon entering for midfielder Sabastien LeToux to replace Keller for his first MLS action. Seattle’s backup, Chris Eylander, has been out since preseason through injury.
Sounders FC continued to attack though down a man, generating quality chances in the 57th and 60th minutes. First, midfielder Brad Evans found himself open between two defenders inside the penalty area, but Hartman stoned Evans’ right-footed shot headed for the back post with a sprawling save. Then in the 60th minute, forward Fredy Montero blasted a shot from 20 yards out just off the cross bar after a short free kick taken by Freddie Ljungberg.
In the 65th minute, Sounders FC threatened again. Forward Nate Jaqua was able to keep a ball in play that was rolling toward the end line. As the ball sat on the line still in play, Jaqua recovered and beat Hartman to the ball, dribbling back into the penalty area and laying a pass off for Montero. Montero took a touch then fired toward goal. The shot beat Hartman, but rookie defender Matt Besler was in position to clear the ball out of play for a corner kick.
After that Seattle chance, Kansas City assumed control of the match. In the 70th minute, Lopez played a corner kick from the right corner flag that was flicked on by defender Aaron Hohlbein at the near post. The flick found its way to defender Jimmy Conrad at the back post, but Conrad’s header flew just over the crossbar.
In the 77th minute, substitute midfielder Michael Harrington got free on the right flank and sent a cross to Jack Jewsbury making a near-post run. Jewsbury was able to redirect the cross on the first touch, sending a well-hit volley toward the back post. Reserve goalkeeper Ben Dragavon parried the chance clear, and Seattle played the rebound out of danger before substitute forward Michael Kraus could put the rebound home.
The Wizards broke through in the 80th minute through another moment of individual brilliance from midfielder/forward Davy Arnaud. After a turnover in midfield, Jack Jewsbury fed the ball square to Arnaud 35 yards from goal. Arnaud took one touch then ripped a right-footed laser into the lower-left corner of goal from over 30 yards out. Dragavon did well to even touch the well-hit shot, but Arnaud now has three goals on the season, all of which have come through long-range efforts of 25 yards or more.
With the goal, Kansas City became the first team to ever score against Seattle Sounders FC in MLS play. By scoring at Qwest Field, the Wizards are now the first team to score MLS goals on the home fields of both Seattle and Toronto FC. Eddie Johnson scored the first MLS goal at BMO Field, converting a shot in the 81st minute of a 1-0 Kansas City victory on April 28, 2007 in the first-ever match at TFC’s home stadium.
The Wizards have now recorded back-to-back shutouts to improve to 2-2-0 and move into 3rd place in the Eastern Conference. Kansas City has not allowed a goal in 196 MLS minutes, dating back to the final moments of a 2-1 loss at Colorado March 28. Kansas City’s shutout streak is second on the year only to the 350-minute streak posted by Seattle before Arnaud’s game-winner Saturday.
Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman has 140 career wins, 79 career shutouts and 1142 career saves after Saturday’s performance—all of which are MLS records. With his 307th career MLS appearance, Hartman also broke a tie with former Los Angeles Galaxy star Cobi Jones. Hartman now trails only New England Revolution Steve Ralston and former Kansas City midfielder and assistant coach Chris Henderson on the League’s all-time games played list. Henderson retired with 317 appearances and is now the Technical Director of Seattle Sounders FC after spending 2007 as an assistant for the Wizards.
Kansas City returns to action next Saturday at the Chicago Fire with a 7:30 p.m. CT kickoff televised live nationally on Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Sports en Español. The Wizards next home game comes Thursday, April 23 at 7 p.m. CT against the New York Red Bulls in a nationally televised match on ESPN2. That night, the first 5,000 fans into CommunityAmerica Ballpark will receive a Jimmy Conrad bobble head courtesy of Time Warner Cable. IRL and NASCAR Truck Series drivers will also be on hand to mingle with fans and sign autographs before the match.
